Name: Bob and Helen (pictured) Schulz
Vineyard location: Willunga
Year vineyard developed: 2000
What prompted you to develop a vineyard?
The simplistic answer is the poor price of almonds. However, there is a bit
more to the story than that. About 5 years ago we decided we
should give some thought to what we would do when we retired. Not living in SA
since we married in 1969, and having spent all but 9 years of that time
overseas, we thought Adelaide was a logical choice as family and friends were
here. We settled on an almond orchard at Rogers Rd, Willunga and after a couple
of harvests it was clear there was little money to be made from almonds.
In 1999 we were weighing up what to replace them with, when Adam entered the
picture. By securing a contract with d’Arenberg Wines, it gave us the security
we needed to plant Shiraz.
Favourite food and wine?
Fresh seafood cooked with a hint of chilli and Asian spices.
Full-bodied SA red, invariably a Shiraz!
Family details:
We have two daughters living in Adelaide and a son who has been globe trotting
for the last 8-9 years. We have two young grandchildren.
Occupation:
Bob is an analytical chemist by training and has
worked most of his life in mineral and oil & gas exploration, for the last
10 years in management. Helen is a hairdresser and beautician. As Indonesian law
restricts these vocations to Nationals, Helen has been heavily involved in
social welfare projects and amateur theatre.
Where do you see the wine industry progressing
in the next five years?
Living in Jakarta for the past 8 years we can say Australian wines sell at one
third to half the cost of other wines of similar quality imported into
Indonesia. With only 3-4% of the world export market at present, we believe the
growth potential for export of medium to premium quality Australian wines is
fantastic!
